Bill Clinton to Speak at DNC Convention

NBC News has learned that the Obama campaign, in an effort to quiet talk of the Obama-Clinton drama, has offered Bill Clinton a speaking role on Wednesday night at the Democratic convention -- before the vice presidential running mate speaks.

Sources say that Clinton in fact will speak.

The campaign rushed tonight to resolve the issue after network news reports about the Clintons and Obama.

I don't care how this may look or any of the politics but this is a good thing. Hillary and Bill are very popular with a large part of this country. and when the Convention starts broadcasting live across the nation, Millions of women will see Hillary praise Obama, and then Wednesday, Bill will speak on why Obama should be elected, this will do volumes with voters.

I don't care what the MSM may say, Obama's lead has been stable since he secured the nomination. and voters are not tunning into the election yet.

but they will when the convention start, and I think having 2 nights of Clintons is a good thing.

That was a very odd comment, as if Obama didn't intend to include the Clintons, something there's NO evidence for whatsoever.  All of this was part of a negotiation to deal with a variety of topics, including the delegates and the debt. With this, look for Clinton to start saying that she's not interested in having her name put in nomination.  

They are all adults who can see their own interests and the interests of the party and they made a deal.

Chortling about it and seeing it as a cave-in demonstrates a lack of political sophistication.

This is not going to be especially nice, but I'm bone tired and really quite impatient with the stupidity and self-possession of politicians throughout the world. Neither Barrack Obama, Hillary Clinton, nor Bill Clinton are included in that category.


You should really label the above statement as pure speculation that does nothing to make any registered voter feel good about voting for Obama.

 Also, while we're discussing NO evidence for whatsoever, how about providing evidence that having Bill Clinton speaking at the DNC was part of a negotiation involving the delegates and the debt. So being politically sophisticated is the opposite of perceiving Bill Clinton's speaking as an Obama cave-in? That sounds more like cynicism has infiltrated deep tissue to me.

It's not a cave in. As you acknowledge, there was no evidence that Obama had any intention of not including Bill or Hillary Clinton. None. You have no inside information on any deals that have been made. As usual per all your posts, you just want to express your anti-Clinton sentiment while "educating" us. You have no idea who Obama will chose as VP, nor a clue as to what we can expect Hillary Clinton to do besides campaigning for Obama in NV tomorrow. Then in other parts of the country. Because she supports Obama, whether or not she gets chosen as VP.

I am so glad you don't have any official position in the Obama campaign. So far I've met almost 1,000 Americans in Mexico who are huge Hillary and Bill Clinton supporters. Someone at the conference actually alerted me to your post to chuckle about the drama/no drama/hackfest still being promoted by some people.

Let it go already. Obama will choose his VP. We'll all be happy, except for maybe a few people who just can't let it go. If it's Hillary, great. If it's Reed, great. Biden would be great, etc. Okay, let's review the lesson we've learned: Stop the drama.

But it won't matter. If Hillary isn't VP then Obama can be defeated in this HUGE Democratic year. It would be a profound defeat. I'll vote for him regardless but it won't be an enthusiastic vote.

she did join in and pretend to be offended at the utterly innofensive comment Bill Clinton made and said she would leave the Democratic party if the super delegates "over-turned" the will of the people, i.e. didn't vote for Obama. She did all of this while maintaining that she didn't have a dog in the race (beyond laughable), kind of like Rachel Maddow.

That's fine, life goes on. I like Dean and Pelosi and Brazille but...Dean screwed up the primaries. Pelosi is head of a House that is as popular as std's and Brazille is Brazille.

Actually that's not what she said: she said she would quit as a superdelegate if "799 of my colleages decide this election".  The subject was the number of superdelegates who were endorsing with the majority of the country yet to vote.

The next day on the same show she clarified that what she meant was that she would resign if they picked a nominee before the voting was done.

Regardless, neither scenario happened.  Since you're in touch with different people than I am, can you satisfy my curiousity and tell me the reasoning behind the "and when is Donna Brazile going to quit like she promised?" comments I keep seeing?

True, but you can't blame Katherine Harris on Donna Brazile.  And as far as how close the election was, you can't blame Dana Milbank, Gore's ridiculous debate performances, and Joe Lieberman on her either.

Speaking of which, this past year Susan Estrich was on Fox, claiming to be a liberal and to be uncommitted in the Democratic Primary.  She was neither.  And if you're talking about botched campaigns, I don't think you're going to find a better villain than the person who ran Michael Dukakis into the ground in 1988.

My point is that the venom directed at Donna Brazile is unlike anything I've ever seen in politics, and frankly, it's unbelievably ugly.  The woman gets death threats every day of her life now.  It's so bad that even if I didn't like her (and I do, more or less), I would back off because of the level of hatred already directed at her.

You should check her bio out.  She was thrown off/fired or replaced by every campaign she ever worked on before Gore.

And I was referencing her firing/resignation when she attempted to leak/push stories of Bush 41 infidelity and racism during Dukakis' campaign.  She got canned within the week.

This time it worked much better for her.  Got to be on the sidelines thowing bombs, and sticking knives from the inside.  The Donna Brazile we know and love.

It is our party...You can continue to live in the past, kickin and screamin about the Clintons.  I have said, and I will repeat, the Big Dog and HRC are true champions of our party but now is the time to rally around Obama and ensure a better future for us and our children.

HRC has become her own legacy and for the most part is more important to this year's election than Bill is.  She is the one we should be listening to and following her lead.

As for Bill being offered a important slot in the Dem Convention, you bitch because Obama offered and you would have bitched if Obama didn't offer him a slot.  Your intentions are clear.

Virtually all Clinton supporters are Obama supporters (and vice versa, by the way).  The ones that aren't are in the process of tossing her in front of the nearest oncoming train.

Today..at least in the on-line media and on the ABC News we just watched...

it is being reported that Clinton wants her delegates "heard". Don't know what this means.
(Perhaps much ado about nothing)

As our President...and leader of their Party it is the last thing the GOP needs to have him in MPLS...

   I'm a DNC pledged delegate for Obama. Your recent PUMA PAC musings piqued my interest, if only because I do sort of have a metric on how big the PUMA people are as a movement. About a month ago I woke up and took a look at my e-mail and instead of seeing few new e-mails in the morning I saw more than three hundred.

   PUMA released the e-mail addresses of the delegates to their supporters and asked them to e-mail us with a form letter. I'm sure you've seen the letter (if not, it's pasted in below), but since I set up a filter to direct every e-mail with "PUMA" in it to a folder on my Outlook, I can tell you that about a month after their letter-writing campaign began (I don't get many more these days), I received a total of 404 messages.

   Given that their entire raison d'etre is getting delegates to vote otherwise, this makes me think the PUMA movement is actually quite small, even if it is quite good at getting press. PUMA will surely stage something at the convention, but if they can only get 404 people to send e-mails, I'm not sure how many they can get to fly to Denver and make an impressive scene.

I thought Bill Clinton gave the best speech at the 2004 convention.  I actually didn't know there was any doubt about whether he'd be speaking at this one, I took it as a given.

How about Al Gore?  Is Tennessee prepared to claim its native son?  I'd sure like to hear from him at the convention.

It's kinda neat to think about the Democratic convention having an all-star lineup that includes both Clintons, Al Gore, and of course "the biggest celebrity in the world"... while the Republican convention is like Tim Pawlenty introducing John McCain to an empty hall while Newt Gingrich desperately mugs for camera time.

Last i heard from him he was trying to get into a fist fight with Chris Matthews .

Which would have been fun to watch . Someone needs to knock some sense into both characters.

I suspect Joe Lieberman would play the role of Zell Miller at the RNC this year .

Well, Zell Miller definitely speaks for a constituency, at least south of the Mason-Dixon line.  Still, I know an awful lot of folks down in Georgia who are like "I really liked him as governor, what the heck happened to him??"

The funny thing about his 2004 convention speech - which I agree was effective, certainly - is that all those defense cuts that supposedly showed Kerry was incapable of defending the country were recommended at the time by Defense Secretary Dick Cheney.  But of course, no one ever heard that fact from the hapless Kerry campaign, they were too busy proving he knew how to duck hunt.

Seriously, Zell Miller cost us in 2004.  I dont know how much but it he has people who listen to him (i dont know why) as we lost votes in states like OH and FL because of him.
